Lady Barron is a small settlement on the southern end of Flinders Island, in the local government area of Flinders in North-east Tasmania. Lady Barron is located about 28 kilometres south-east of the town of Whitemark. As at the 2016 census, Lady Barron had a permanent population of less than 160 people. Lady Barron is the second-largest town on Flinders Island, after Whitemark. Lady Barron has a small airport (mostly used by private operators and for sightseeing) and a ferry terminal for the Bridport to Flinders Island ferry service operated by Furneaux Freight. Lady Barron appears to have been named for Clara, wife of Major General Sir Harry Barron, who was Governor of Tasmania from 1909 to 1913. The Barrons married in 1877 and had a daughter.
Lady Barron is located immediately on the seaside and offers peace and quiet, scenic views, excellent fresh local seafood,and abundant wildlife. Lady Barron is located on the southern shores of the Franklin Sound, and is a great starting point for exploring Flinders Island.
Try your luck at fishing from the wharf in the middle of Lady Barron as well as take long, quiet walks along the protected foreshore. There is a walk up to the Vinegar Hill lookout that is worth the effort and rewards with spectacular views across the Furneaux Islands to Cape Barren Island. Just west of Lady Barron is Strzelecki National Park, with its remote sheltered beaches (including Trousers Point) and challenging Strzelecki Peaks Walking Track. Hire cars are available in Whitemark or Lady Barron allowing you to explore Flinders Island, including the Furneaux Museum at Emita, the Wybalenna Aboriginal historic site and wildlife parks.
Don’t forget to sample the island’s produce, including its famous meat and fresh seafood, at the local tavern in Lady Barron. A range of tours are available as well as fishing and dive charters. Why not take a scenic flight that departs from the Lady Barron airfield, and that offers beautiful views of Flinders Island and surrounds.

Flinders Island can be reached by plane or sea; Sharp Airlines fly from Essendon Airport Melbourne (1-hour), from Launceston (35 mins) or from Hobart (1-hour). There is a shuttle service available for the short drive between the airport and Whitemark. You can also hire a car Whitemark, or a campervan or bicycle to get around the island. Please note there is no public transport on Flinders Island, so you will need some form of transport to get around. There is a weekly barge service operated by Furneaux Freight that travels between Bridport and Lady Barron which allows you to bring your own car, campervan, motorbike or bike to the island. Where possible, please avoid driving at night. You are sharing the roads with a large amount of native wildlife, so take it carefully, drive slowly to the conditions and watch out for animals on roads including wombats and wallabies.
