This is one of Tasmania’s hidden camping gems, a generous size campground spectacularly located on rugged Flinders Island in the Furneaux group of islands, Tasmania Australia. The campsite North East River camping area Flinders Island is located app. 15 kilometres east of Killiecrankie, and some 41 kilometres of 1-hour drive from the main centre of Whitemark. There are several tracks that lead off the North East Road to a series of fabulous camping spots immediately next to the river. Take Care When swimming and with small children near the water, there are very strong undertows in the area. North East River is popular for surfing Flinders Island, and also offers a range of different fishing options (boat, shore, surf, freshwater, saltwater) and birdwatching. Flinders Island can be accessed by air from Launceston, Hobart or Essendon across Bass strait with Sharp Airlines. Sharp Airlines offer regular, daily services from both Launceston Airport and Essendon Airport and also has recently introduced a service three times a week from Hobart. There is an airfield located at Killiecrankie in the North East corner of Flinders Island. The airstrip enables pilots to land in the beautiful town of Killicrankie, the gateway to Flinders Island. Pets are OK at the North East River campground, but please keep on leads and under control. The Tasmanian Parks andWildlife Service manage this campground, but it is not in a National Park. Bookings can’t be made – all camping is on a first-come, first-served basis. This campground, like all campsites on Flinders Island, is best suited to camping in a small vehicle such as a campervan or a camper trailer. Tent camping is fine at North East River, however, please note it can get very windy in this area, and high rainfall is common.
